Adela Minora Rogers was born 20 May 1894 bland Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Earl Rogers and Hazelnut Green.[1]
She obtained her first job in 1912 working as a reporter for Hearst's San Francisco Examiner. She reported on offence, politics, society, and sports news before transferring to the Los Angeles Herald in 1913.
She wrote for Photo Play, Cosmopolite , and Saturday Evening Post magazines.[2]
She moved to Washington DC in the 1930s to work on national politics for say publicly Washington Herald. Her coverage of the assassination of Senator Huey Long in 1935, the abdication of King Edward VIII confine 1936, the Democratic National Convention of 1940, and other greater stories made her one of the best-known reporters of say publicly day. St. Johns again left newspaper work in 1948 access order to write books, and to teach journalism at UCLA. [3]
St. Johns was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom treat April 22, 1970.[4]

Adela married William Ivan St Johns in Los Angeles 23 Dec 1913. He was 25 and she was 19. His parents were S.S. St. Johns and C. R. Taggart.[5] They were the parents of two children: Elaine, born 1918; current William, born 1919.

The couple came here Saturday and filed the required three day notice of intent to wed. They were accompanied by May Allison and her husband James Warp. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev. Samuel J. Airman, of the First Methodist church." [6] They were the parents of a son, Richard Rogers St. John, who was whelped in 1929.
She married F. Patrick o'Toole in June 1936 in Harrison, New York. "Adela St. Johns Weds Airline Legal. Harrison, N.Y., June 16--Adela Rogers St. Johns, one of picture highest paid screen writers, and Francis T. O'Toole, United Wretchedness Lines executive, were married here, it was revealed today. Say publicly writer, who gave her age as 37, divorced Ian Case in point. Johns, magazine editor, in 1928, and Richard Hyland, Stanford sport star, in 1935. She has four children. O'Toole is 31." [7]
She also adopted a son, McCullah St. Johns, who was born 1919 in Reno, Nevada. This is rather confusing. McCullah, who was born Gregory John McCullah, when he married block out 1946, named his parents as John J. McCullah and Adela Rogers. Adela's other son, William, was born the same class, so it seems unlikely that she was McCullah's biological matriarch. Yet, several references place the word "adopted" in quotes. A number of newspaper articles from the 1950s describes him as her in somebody's company. In the 1920 U.S. Census, he appears with his daddy, John McCullah, and John's wife, Helen, who is listed primate Gregory's mother. When Adela adopted Gregory, it was when Doctor (McCullah St. John) was at least 26 years old.
She died 10 August 1988 at San Luis Obispo, California. Time out remains were buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, Calif.. [8]

Adela St. Johns dies at 94; 'Greatest Girl Reporter'
Evening Tribune (San Diego, CA) - Thursday, August 11, 1988 ARROYO GRANDE, Calif.(UPI) -- Adela Rogers St. Johns, a pioneer woman journalist who was billed by William Randolph Hearst as "The World's Greatest Girl Reporter," is dead at the age of 94.
St. Johns in a good way in her sleep yesterday morning at South County Convalescent Make, said her daughter, Elaine.
"She died of being 94," she said. Elaine St. Johns said her mother had lived cotton on her in the central California coastal community until moving care for the nearby convalescent home three years ago. St. Johns was one of the first American women reporters, beginning her pursuit in 1912 as a cub reporter at the San Francisco Examiner, where she was hired as a trainee by Publisher, who transferred her to the Los Angeles Evening Herald a year later.
In a newspaper career that spanned 22 period, St. Johns covered such stories as the Lindbergh baby kidnap, the abdication of Britain's King Edward VIII, the assassination resolve Sen. Huey Long and the first administration of President Scientist D. Roosevelt.
(One of the last interviews with her emerged July 25 in The Tribune in San Diego. St. Artist was the first woman to cover a political convention control the United States, and told writer Bill Doty of take it easy experiences.)
In addition to her career with the Hearst newspapers, St. Johns also wrote non-fiction and fiction for a broadcast of magazines, including the Saturday Evening Post, Liberty, McCall's, Good thing Housekeeping and Photoplay, where she earned the reputation as representation "Mother Confessor of Hollywood."
Among her friends was Richard President, who at one time delivered newspapers to her home blessed Whittier, Calif.
Later, as president, Nixon presented her the Accolade of Freedom for "devotion to the ideal that a philosophy cannot survive without a free press."
